Food Contact Materials – EU Regulation (EC) 1935/2004
If you use packaging or materials that come into contact with food, they must comply with EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004. This regulation ensures that food-contact materials are safe for consumers and suitable for their intended use.
This applies to all packaging and components that are:
- In direct contact with food (e.g. trays, films, containers, linings)
- Used in processing, storage, or transport of food products
What the Regulation Requires
Under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, food-contact materials must:
- Not release harmful substances into the food
- Not change the taste, smell or appearance of the food
- Be manufactured in accordance with good manufacturing practice (GMP)
- Be traceable throughout the supply chain
Certain material types (like plastics, ceramics, paper, inks, etc.) may also be subject to specific EU or national legislation, including migration limits or material-specific declarations.
